Why Lifelong Learning Matters by best selling author, editor and INsider, Soulla Christodoulou

In today’s fast-paced world, trying to balance work, home, and social life can make it easy to put personal and career growth on the back seat.

With the world changing so quickly, industries evolving in a flash, and new tech popping up all the time, it’s crucial to stay sharp and ready to adapt. If you’re aiming to boost your career or just want to keep up, making time for learning and growth isn’t just beneficial—it’s essential. The real challenge is figuring out how to squeeze it into your already packed schedule. But before we dive into that, let’s talk about why this is so important.

Why Lifelong Learning Matters

Developing myself personally and professionally isn’t just about soaking up new info. It keeps me flexible, adaptable, and satisfied. In a world where jobs and skills can become irrelevant pretty quickly, continual learning helps you stay ready for whatever comes your way.

“When you focus on growing, you not only get better at what you do now, but you also open doors for future opportunities.”

It’s important to staying relevant in a way that advances your career and you are fulfilled.

How to Make Time for Growth

The main hurdle, for so many businesspeople and entrepreneurs, isn’t wanting to learn; it’s finding the time. But there are plenty of ways to weave learning into your day, no matter how busy you are.

  1. Try Micro-Learning: Not all learning needs hours of your time. Micro-learning—little, focused learning bits—can slip into even the tightest schedules. Podcasts, short online courses, or 15-minute reads during breaks can add up. Apps similar to Duolingo are great for quick learning bursts. You can also follow Instagram accounts that share tips and insights on topics you want to learn about for more passive learning.
  2. Dive Into Podcasts and Audiobooks: Make the most of your commute or workout with podcasts, audiobooks, or TED talks. They’re full of knowledge about industry trends or new ideas, giving you a passive way to learn while doing other things.
  3. Network and Connect: Learning can also come from others. Engaging with peers and industry pros can be just as enriching. Networking events, book events (Faber and Waterstones have some great events), and platforms like LinkedIn offer great chances to swap ideas, gain new views, and keep up with industry shifts.
  4. Commit to Online Courses: Sign up for courses on platforms like Coursera, LinkedIn Learning, or niche industry sites to dive deeper into topics. Many of these sites offer self-paced options, so you can fit them into your busy life.

Why Growth Matters for Authors and Editors

For authors, partnering with an editor focused on growth is crucial. Publishing trends change fast, with digital content, reader tastes, and marketing strategies always evolving. An editor stuck in the past can be a setback, but one who stays updated can provide insights that elevate an author’s work, which is why I’m passionate about learning! I frequently share what I’m learning or curious about, and I’m always open to others teaching me new things.

  1. Being Aware of Industry Changes: Editors need to catch the latest in publishing, like new platforms, changing reader preferences, or shifting marketing tactics. An editor on top of trends can guide authors toward success, ensuring their books stand out.
  2. Thinking Outside the Box: Great editors are more than just grammar checkers—they’re strategic partners. By constantly learning, they can bring fresh ideas, whether it’s using new tools like AI to help broaden your learning (Not to write for you!) or experimenting with storytelling techniques.
  3. Honing Skills: Like any professional, editors need to keep refining their craft. Staying updated with new storytelling methods, editing software, and promotional best practices ensures they remain effective.
  4. Building Stronger Partnerships: An editor who values growth is likely to form better collaborations. Open to new ideas and innovations, they can work alongside authors in progressive ways, benefiting the book and the author-editor relationship.

The Best Investment is You

With everything changing rapidly, standing still is not an option. The best investment you can make is in yourself. Whether you’re in a corporate job, freelancing, or taking on a creative project like writing, making time for your growth ensures long-term success.

Balancing a heavy workload with continuous learning can seem daunting, but it’s doable with the right approach. Prioritising personal and professional development keeps you ahead in your career and enriches your personal satisfaction. Whether it’s an editor guiding an author or a professional navigating their career, growth is the key to unlocking your greater potential and staying relevant in an ever-evolving world.
